Mitsubishi has been a longstanding member of California’s unmatched innovation ecosystem. The Silicon Valley Branch of Mitsubishi Corporation was established in 1974 with an early mandate to purchase satellites for the Japanese government. Over the years, the focus of its activities expanded to trading computer chips, healthcare devices, and telecommunications equipment. In the 1990s it began investing in local startups and in the fall of 2016, was rebranded as M-Lab, an innovation space where major companies can collaborate and innovate. They designed a training program to foster entrepreneurial mindset and skills and engage with local partners including Stanford University, UC Berkeley and 500 startups.
Mitsubishi’s key business strategy involves leveraging its knowledge of industries and markets around the world to create new, sustainable businesses. Its operations in California are a key aspect of that work.
