A “smart city” is a city in which different components of urban infrastructure – including systems of public transportation, traffic, energy, public health and emergency management – share high levels of technological connectivity.  This technological innovation and collaboration is designed to improve safety, efficiency, economic development, environmental, and quality-of-life outcomes in urban environments.  Examples of smart city efforts include connected and autonomous (self-driving) vehicles, smart grid integration systems, open data efforts to empower citizens and entrepreneurs, and many other partnerships.

Overview of President Obama's Smart Cities Initiative: Administration Announces New “Smart Cities” Initiative to Help Communities Tackle Local Challenges and Improve City Services

The GO-Biz Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit works with collaborative assets to support the development of smart cities throughout California.  Many advanced industries will flourish in the context of smart and connected cities, creating new economic and workforce development opportunities for California.

  • Autonomous Vehicles: The Unit is helping California establish itself as a leader in the development of autonomous vehicles. Those states that embrace this new technology will yield the greatest economic rewards and will also be best positioned to mitigate the potentially disruptive effects of this technology.

  • CyberCalifornia: The CyberCalifornia initiative will also accelerate the development of smart cities by facilitating collaborations related to the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT phenomenon refers to the proliferation of physical devices and people that are connected to networks that are linked to the internet and communicating sensitive data.

  • International Drone Expo 2016: The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit’s work related to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) will also support the development of smart cities and connected infrastructure. Deputy Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Louis Stewart spoke at the International Drone Expo on December 9, 2016.
